Piano Case, Keyboard, And Strings: Separation-Derived Musical Instruments In An Interactive Composition

چکیده

This paper proposes analysis as an effective technique for creating new instruments. Acoustic piano components such as the case, strings, and keyboard mechanism are defined as independent acoustic separation-derived musical instruments. Enhancement of the instruments via digital signal processing and synthesis is also discussed. Friction driven physical model of the string is used to complete the string separation-derived instrument. Expressive potential and characteristic sonorities of these instruments are exemplified in Three Movements for unprepared piano and electronics.

Mapping strategies and sound engine design for an augmented hybrid piano

Based on a combination of novel mapping techniques and carefully designed sound engines, I present an augmented hybrid piano specifically designed for improvisation. The mapping technique, originally developed for other control interfaces but here adapted to the piano keyboard, is based on a dynamic vectorization of control parameters, allowing both wild sonic exploration and minute intimate ex...

Augmenting the Acoustic Piano with Electromagnetic String Actuation and Continuous Key Position Sensing

This paper presents the magnetic resonator piano, an augmented instrument enhancing the capabilities of the acoustic grand piano. Electromagnetic actuators induce the strings to vibration, allowing each note to be continuously controlled in amplitude, frequency, and timbre without external loudspeakers. Feedback from a single pickup on the piano soundboard allows the actuator waveforms to remai...

Perception of Interactive Vibrotactile Cues on the Acoustic Grand and Upright Piano

An experiment has been conducted, measuring pianists’ sensitivity to piano key vibrations at the fingers while playing an upright or a grand Yamaha Disklavier piano. At each trial, which consisted in playing loud and long A notes across the whole keyboard, vibrations were either present or absent through setting the Disklavier pianos to normal or quiet mode. Sound feedback was always provided b...

Andante: Walking Figures on the Piano Keyboard to Visualize Musical Motion

We present Andante, a representation of music as animated characters walking along the piano keyboard that appear to play the physical keys with each step. Based on a view of music pedagogy that emphasizes expressive, full-body communication early in the learning process, Andante promotes an understanding of music rooted in the body, taking advantage of walking as one of the most fundamental hu...

From Toy to Tutor: Note-Scroller is a Game to Teach Music

The computer games industry has recently been producing titles in a new genre called ‘music’ that toys with engaging the user in musical expression. The technology used in these games has allowed for novel interfaces for representing musical instructions which has yet to be tried within musical practice and tuition. The games themselves have greatly simplified the instruments and the music crea...
